“Videos in the 21st Century”

I’m honestly fond of watching videos but never in creating one. It was quiet a burden for me, I mean why create one when you can just simply click then Bang! Here it is! Sorry sir for telling this, bet if ever you’re gonna read this. But on the other hand, sometimes what we don’t want is what’s best for us, right? I don’t maybe find the sense of it right now but maybe in the future it will benefit me.

But in some cases, Videos are very useful. I am a Mathematics student and I find Math hard to learn actually, so what I do sometimes is to look for the videos about the topic and yes, it’s very useful. Videos give you more detailed and clear explanations whereas teachers sometimes couldn’t give. It is very beneficiary to our Audio-Visual learners, it could give a more long term restoration learning.

In my experience of Video Editing, it is not as simple as it is. But quiet worth it if ever you produce a good outcome of your video. We could say not all the time, we’re gonna create some videos but at the very least we know how video works and how do we edit or produce it.

Ms Excel is used very widely nowadays by everyone because it is very helpful and it helps in saving a lot of time. “Pathway of a Hopeful Teacher”

    What are the qualities you should have to be called a good teacher? Why did you choose to be a teacher out of all the professions? How prepared are you as a future teacher in teaching Generation Z? These are the questions I ought to answer as a future teacher. And how do you think am I supposed to answer these quests? Would you prefer an intellectual or a truthful answer? So let’s start this with why did I choose this profession…

      My dream is to be an accountant. It never crossed my mind to be a teacher. I passed the MSU SASE and the cutoff of my dream course. I talked about it with my parents, I felt that they were doubtful and hesitant with my decision but I already settled my mind. On the day of enrollment, my father came with me which I really appreciate knowing that he is quiet busy. The school was a bit far from ours but for me, it was quite my way of having my own freedom and independence. That is naturally the mindset of every student, right? But actually it was a hell having no nap every night, having worries every time, and over thinking every day, and because of these I lose weight which makes my parent scold at me every time they see me.

      Back to the topic, I was glad to know that the campus has their own Mosque inside. Dad prayed for “Duhr” at that time, it was around 1:10 PM. When he finished praying, he suddenly asked me, “Are you sure about your course?” I was right that they don’t want me to take my chosen path. So I asked him, “What do you want me to take then?” “How about you take Education?” I then changed my application course into “BSed Math” immediately.  Why did I accept it easily? If you think it’s because of my parent’s decision, you’re correct there.  But at the same time we could say it was my choice too because I realized that in some way compared to other courses, I can have more time in regulating my “Deen” (faith) which is more important to me.

      Next is what are the qualities of a good teacher? I bet that even if I didn’t give the answer, you already have something in your mind. And if not, just search it on Google, it will give you a better idea. For 3 years, I’ve encountered this question many times since I chose this path. And my answer is that it doesn’t really matter but the real question is despite of knowing these good qualities, until when can you have it as a teacher? Is it only by months or maybe a year because we all know that teachers themselves have their own limitations and problems in life that sometimes no matter how good you are in your profession, you can be at your weakest points.

To me, A good teacher has his/her own visions and dreams in life where he/she tries to share it with his/her students that no matter how many trials he/she stumble upon, he/she will not tremble and give up his/her visions and dreams for his/her students just like a mother sharing his/her visions and dreams with his/her son/daughter. A good teacher doesn’t mean you have to be that good neither in constructing correct grammar nor ending up with the correct equations, it is valuing the potentials of your  students and molding them into a better teacher themselves, for everyone can be a teacher like how I treat my Ome as my first and  best teacher in life.

For the last question, I honestly can say I am not yet prepared as of now. Students in Generation Z are more competent yet scary at the same time that is why as a future teacher, I still need to enhance myself and be more prepared. I have my own fears and doubts on myself, and it is inevitable. I cannot be strong all the time but despite of this, I know I need to take my weakness into strength.

I met many types of teacher all the time and I am scared for not all the time teachers produced engineers, doctors, accountants, attorneys, or teacher but sometimes we cannot deny the reality that some of these teachers produced engineers, doctors, accountants, attorneys, or teacher that are corrupt and thief at their own country. They are the monsters hiding at their mask, waiting for the right opportunity to attack. That instead of “Cure of the Society” they are the “Cancer of the Society” which is sad to know. Like what they said, “The rich becomes richer and the poor becomes poorer” and whom to be blamed for this? Isn’t it the teacher? No, it’s not them but in some part, Can we blame them? It’s for you to decide.

If not some of the teachers are after only to the salary and position, and not teaching only what is in the books, focusing on the Theorems and Postulates which is readable. Then in some case, we might be able to develop the students into a good person that instead of choosing greed of money and fame, they will choose justice and peace for their own country, choosing Patriotism. Let’s not forget the real essence and purpose of Education.

A friend of mine before in high school told me “Lisod man mag teacher uy kay basi didto lang ka magwork sa probinsya nimo, didto na lang ka magwork  pirme tas murag ra kag nagskwela kay iskwelahan gyapun.” I keep quiet at that time because in some way she has a point and it wasn’t my plan to be a future teacher at that time. But this time, my answer is that, “Oo lisod siya mura ra kag nagaskwela pero unsay problema kung magtudlo ka sa inyung probinsya or sa inyung banwa, wala man diba, ma ayo pa gani kay sa mugawas kag pinas tas didto tabangan nimo ang iban para mubright tas imung kapwa di nimo tabangan.”  If I were to teach here, it might be better because I can teach my fellow Filipino especially Muslims whom I guess who needed my ability the most. And it will be a privilege to make them what they dreamed to be and help some of them to be the best version of themselves. I want to be a hopeful teacher who always has a hope despite of the darkness of this life and this is my pathway.

      Hi to all the readers especially to the commentators out there! Again I am “The Dreamer” and I guess you have already read my autobiography therefore I don’t have to introduce myself anymore. So for today I’m going to share to you my one of a kind one hour interview to one of the staffs of the leading radio station in Mindanao State University, the BOMBA radio station! Meet Ms. Fatimah Hadji Jamil, one of the news anchors in the BOMBA radio station!!

So without so much ado, Here are her answers to my given questions prior to her first time real experience in the field of radio broadcasting:

1.  Can you give us some of your experiences while making the radio broadcasting with your group mates?

“Well all I could say is that we did a lot of repetition.” The reason is that we couldn’t give the right voice and emotion for each segment, knowing that we are all newbie for this kind of project. It was tiring and exhausting but thankfully everything was worth it. Because when we first heard our voices in the class- it was like “Is that really me talking?”

But the most difficult one in our experiences is that when we tried looking for a location where we can record freely without some noises because we cannot afford paying some radio station in General Santos City. We are an MSUan-known for its very affordable payment fees but with a high quality of education, in short “Mga Iskolar ng Bayan.” So what we did is we went to our group mate’s house (Boyen’s house) and thanks to him we were able to make it though it took us a week to prepare for the scripts and other materials. 

2. What are the lessons you have learned while making the material?

The lesson I have learned in making the Radio Broadcasting is that you need a lot of patience, and importantly, you and your group mates should have Unity, Cooperation, and Understanding in doing it. And I realize it was not as easy as I thought it to be, to be able to radio broadcast. We just did an hour and a half radio broadcasting so I realize how about those DJs and broadcasters on radio who talk everyday and every minute just to give some information and entertainment to their listeners. It was a sacrifice indeed and they really should have take time in taking care of their voices because some of them, that is their only source of income. But for me, it will never be tiring for those who love what they are doing and whose passion is in it.

3. What are the possible advantages this material inside the classroom?

Radio Broadcasting has a lot of possible advantages inside the classroom like for example; it can boost the confidence of the learner, it can show some hidden talents of the learner, it can make the students not just a good speaker but also a good listener, it can create and attract some interests of the students, and also it can enhance the skills of the students which will benefit them in the future. This activity will also make them a 21^st century learner who implies technology in their Education and learning. After all, to be globally competitive students, we need to adapt the environment of the modern world!

And that’s all for our interview, I hope you learn something! To add up some, during our interview it also made me realize that, “If you think you can make it, then you can really do it.” Just like when they think of a way to make it despite of the circumstances.

“Teachers make Changes”

     1)    Describe Mrs. Gruwell as a teacher. How did she handle her class? What are her qualities that made her a teacher of yesteryear? 21^st century teacher?

Mrs. Gruwell is a great teacher that future educators should follow because she has those unique qualities that a good teacher should have. Like for example; she just didn’t teach her students about subject matters but also inspires the students, change their way of thinking  in life and in school, aspires them to become not just as a better student but also as a better person, and lastly, for serving as a hope to her students. On the other hand, the qualities that she have as a teacher  of yesteryear are that she is quite strict and her authority as a teacher dominates in  the  class  and also she sometimes uses the lecture teaching approach at the same time as as a 21^st century  teacher,  the qualities that she have are that she is technologically literate because she uses technology as a medium in her teaching method, and as you can see, she lets her student discover ideas and uses more activities to demonstrate the lessons and even field trips  to let  the student learn by means of doing. Therefore she also uses learner’s centered approach and the way her classroom looks like was of a 21^st century design.

2)     Describe the composition of Mrs. Gruwell’s class? How is racism manifested in the movie?

Mrs. Gruwell’s class is not the ideal type of class. A variety type of students whose personalities, principles, cultures and race differs. Her class is really different from the white men’s class which is said to be the honor’s class in their school. In the movie, Racism is highly manifested in the story just by seeing in the first day of Mrs. Gruwell teaching where each student group themselves by their race and color not  just within the school but also outside. They even fight with each other to keep their said territories to keep their pride to themselves for that is how they grew up, “If one kills the enemy, then honor and respect is what they get.”

3) Describe the principal and Mrs. Gruwell’s coordinator.  How would you relate their     characters and views in real life?

If I will relate the principal and Mrs. Gruwell’s coordinator in real life then I could say honestly that many of them exist. Where Rules and laws are more important to them even if it’s not always the wants and needs of the students and sometimes limits the students to learn in a way they want. These kind of people in authority at times abuse their power to control the minority and the rules which hinders the minority to get what they really want and need even if it is for a good cause. It’s sad to know that many of them exists that  instead of helping  the  students and encourage them, they do the opposite that  results for the student’s to lose their trust to them.

4) What are the strategies and activities she used to her class? How did it help in making her class successful?

She used many strategies and activities in her class for example; she used field trips, game-based activities, writings, watching videos, giving them books like Diary of Anne Frank for them to read and discover, interview, debate, impromptu and etc. These help the class to be successful because in this way they experience, communicate, think, self-reflect, and learn together. Most importantly, they were able to build harmonious relationship and strong camaraderie between each other. Lastly, they became friends not just classmates and genuinely they unite and understand each other.

5) Is there uses of technology in the class? Elaborate.

Yes. When Mrs. Gruwell had the field trip with the class, many type of access of machinery were shown to the students like they watch some videos and photos shown to them by the use of technology. And also during the class, through the use of projectors, they watch some movies about wars and suffering of some brave people. These ways, the students learn more in an accessible and easier manner.

        6) If you’ll be assigned with a class or students in conflict, how will you handle it?

Ideally, I would like it to be how Mrs. Gruwell handled conflicts. Yet not easy though because there are many factors that sometimes will push you to your limit and will make you down like family, friends, society, and even your loved ones. That’s why if possible, I need to have a long lasting patience, have strength to endure the pain and problems, be calm and confident in actions and words, be good and transparent at making decisions, and of course, a good heart with strong personality that believes in success. This way, I might be able to solve and handle conflicts with trust in myself and in God.

7) What are your insights and learning’s after watching the movie?

         In this movie, I had many insights and learnings from Mrs. Gruwell and from her class. Like it’s not easy to be a teacher, it takes time, sweat, effort, and sometimes sacrifice. For me, before teacher is just a job, you just need to teach the students about what you know about the subject but because of Mrs. Gruwell, it changed my perception of being a teacher, I think I’ll be happier if I just don’t take teacher as a job but also as a profession and a lifetime commitment to my students. That it is better if you just don’t teach the students but also change them in a better person where they can create their own dreams and hope because of you. Like what Mrs. Gruwell said, “I found the sense on my life when my students found their own.”  This means she creates a deeper relationship with her students and it’s not just her who helps her students but also vice versa.  Not all people are the same, not all share the same ideas and experiences, not all go through the same amount of pain but all have reasons why they act and think like that. You should never judge base on what you see because all have their own stories to write, and the best thing to do is understand and appreciate them so that you can gain their trust, that’s what I realized from her students.

8) What is the symbolic representation of room 203? How did it help her  students?

        Room  203  is not just a class where you learn;  it is where you find peace and hope,  it is where like you live with your own family, it is where you share and voice out your ideas that you can’t tell  to others, it is where you can cry and laugh at any moment, it is where build relationships and experiences  with others, it is where you create the best version of yourself, it is where like you forget about your own problems  and sorrows,  it is where like you can find your 2^nd mother,  your inspiration and your hero in some way. This all describes a home, that’s my symbolic representation of room 203, it helps her students in many ways.

We have 10 shots already…,” “How about in….?” “It’s so far, I can’t walk there in this very hot season you know!”

That friend of mine that is always with me through thick and thin is no other than Ms. Shairyll M. Malabarbas. She's quite bully because she would always tease you and make fun of you but a very rare type of friend because she will always be there for you in times of bad times and good times. A special friend of mine who never left me throughout the years and if you ever you're gonna read this, note this is a real joke! Hahaha just kidding Bai!

            Remembering those very exhausting yet momentous days with her, we walked like we’re in a rush just to get some good photos to be passed the next morning, we even climbed the tree, laid on the grass, went to some look-like forest area, ran to the stairs to get to the rooftop, and walked very far from this building to that building. It was tiring yet exciting because in some way, we love to capture things and we created another memories together. She was the truest friend since I enter college, we rarely have big fights because we make up right after. She knows me better than anyone and I know her too well too. That even if we just look at each other, we already know what’s going on.

            Friendship Gallery not because the pictures only consists of us but because behind that every pictures- we took it together, we laughed together, we complained at each other, we got tired together, and we had our own stories together. We made what we called friendship. It was not because of the grades but because we enjoyed taking pictures even if it’s nothing compared to others. Therefore, All I could say is I’m blessed to have her, that’s why “In every picture, there’s a story that will forever be remained and cherished.” Keep your true friends always! "Starting with Me"

Hi to my readers out there! I’m Nor-Fatimah H.J. Barat, 20 years of age. And I’m from Polomolok, South Cotabato currently taking up BSed Mathematics at Mindanao State University, General Santos City. I graduated at Notre-Dame Siena College of Polomolok when I was in high school. And I’m already on my 3^rd year level in College and so far, everything’s okay. I’m a Proud Muslim-Meranao-Filipino citizen, and a peace advocate. I’m from the genes of my very supportive parents, Montano Barat and Sally Barat.

To know me more, here are my likes and dislikes; Anime and K-dramas movies instead of action and horror movies (I totally hate horrors!), Ice cream instead of a cake (Not chocolate though), reading and writing articles instead of solving equations, at home or library instead of at party, light on than lights off when sleeping, Classical songs than Rock songs, Cats than Dogs, listening than talking, and would prefer being alone than being surrounded by many people.

I’m not neither an introvert nor extrovert, I just don’t like socializing with many people but I’m not afraid to approach them either. I don’t hate responsibilities but I don’t like having many of them. I don’t have any specific talent but I know how to bake and I’d really love to try taekwondo. I’m quite sensitive and maybe the type of person that just observes what’s going around. I don’t have many achievements and I only have two specific goals in life, “To make my parents proud and to fulfill my responsibilities as a Muslim.” My quote in life is simply, “Don’t take failures in your heart but don’t also take success in your head.” That’s all for my Autobiography, and have more time in reading my articles.
